Biographical history
Roy Coad was born in 1925 to missionary parents in Kalene, Zambia. He was educated in England and became a qualified accountant in Winchester. He joined the firm Griffin Stone, Moscrop and Co. in London, achieving a senior partnership by his retirement in 1990. Later, he also worked in an Anglican church. His achievements include founding the Christian Brethren Research Fellowship; becoming editor of the magazine
The Harvester; and working as a church elder in Carshalten and Sutton. Coad's publications include A History of the Brethren Movement, a biography of Sir John W. Laing and Verses from an Incomer: Poems from Shropshire and Elsewhere. Roy Coad died in 2011, leaving behind a wife, two sons and a daughter.
Archival history
The card index was passed to Tim Grass during his researches into the Open Brethren movement for his book,
Gathering to His Name. He donated the index to the University of Manchester Library in July 2004.

Scope and content
Collection of index cards, sorted thematically. Made up of notes and references, mostly from Brethren magazines, in particular:
Witness, Harvester and Believers' Magazine. The collection was compiled by Roy Coad during the research for his book A History of the Brethren Movement. The collection consists of two boxes (contents listed below). There is also a smaller box of biographical notes arranged in alphabetical order.
