Thomas Hanbury:
Thomas Hanbury (1832-1907) was born on 21 Jun 1832 in Clapham, Surrey, the fourth child of Daniel Bell Hanbury, a pharmaceutical chemist, and his wife Rachel Christy. The family were Quakers, and Hanbury was educated in predominantly Quaker schools and was a practising Friend all his life. His eldest brother, Daniel Hanbury, was a botanist and pharmacognosist. Hanbury worked for William James Thompson & Sons, tea brokers, in Mincing Lane, London, from 1849. In 1853 he went to Shanghai, China, and, financially backed by his uncle, and in business with three partners, he started Hanbury & Co, merchants in silk and tea. In 1857 he entered into a new partnership, Bower, Hanbury & Co, which in time moved into currency trading and cotton broking. Hanbury's success made him the largest property owner in Shanghai. He learned Mandarin and travelled in China, and became highly respected by the local inhabitants, helping set up a hospital and creating gardens in the European settlements. He left Shanghai in 1871 and was inundated with gifts from Chinese friends and acquaintances.
Between 1866 and 1869 Hanbury visited Europe, travelling to the Cote d'Azur, France. He purchased an uninhabited villa at Mortola, Ventimiglia, Italy, owned by the Orengo di Roccasterone family. Hanbury and his brother Daniel planned to create a botanical garden there. Hanbury married Katharine Aldam Pease in 1868. In December 1868 Hanbury appointed Ludwig Winter, botanist and garden designer, as head gardener, and Daniel worked on the garden while Hanbury and his wife went to China. They returned to live at La Mortola in 1871. The villa was restored, and the garden, later called the Giardini Botanici Hanbury, extended over 18 of the whole 45 hectares of land. Hanbury appointed a series of curators of the garden from 1873. The gardens were visited by many prominent individuals, among them Queen Victoria in 1882, members of her family, and J.D. Hooker.
Hanbury and his wife carried out many philanthropic acts, setting up two local schools and purchasing a second villa to create the Hanbury Botanical Institute, comprising a laboratory, herbarium and museum, dedicated during the 1892 International Congress at Genoa. In 1901, in recognition of his overseas services, he was created Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. In 1903 Hanbury purchased George Fergusson Wilson's experimental garden at Wisley and gifted it to the RHS, ending the Society's long search for a larger garden away from the pollution and constrictions of London. He was awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour in the same year.
Hanbury had four children, Cecil, Horace, Daniel and Hilda. He died at La Mortola on 9 Mar 1907, and was buried in the garden under a pavilion.

The archive comprises 19th- and early 20th century letters, mostly from Sir Thomas Hanbury, to the Rev George Edward Comerford Casey and his family. Hanbury, a businessman and philanthropist, is known for creating the world famous garden at La Mortola, Italy, and for purchasing the garden at Wisley in 1903 and gifting it to the RHS. Hanbury wrote to the Comerford Caseys between the years 1898 and his death in 1907, and the letters suggest he looked for opportunities to assist the family financially. Letters relate to a number of different topics including a trip Olive and Bertie Comerford Casey made to La Mortola in 1901 for the wedding of 'Isabella', visits from daughters of Queen Victoria for tea at La Mortola, and publication and translation of natural history books relating to the Riviera, including 'Riviera Nature Notes' by George Comerford Casey, dedicated to Thomas Hanbury. One letter, dated 27 September 1903, includes a reference to Hanbury's gift of Wisley to the RHS and the opinion of the then director of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, William Thiselton Dyer: Hanbury describes him as the first strong opponent he has met of the RHS having the Wisley garden, Dyer arguing that the garden is 'expensive, inconveniently located, and no use when Kew supplies every want'. Hanbury showed Dyer the trust deed, where it is stipulated that the estate would pass to Kew if the RHS fail to keep it up; Dyer responded, to Hanbury's amusement, 'let us pray they will not keep it up'. Other papers in the archive include black and white photographic prints, mostly 1901, press cuttings, 1907-1965, and printed sheet headed 'In memoriam Thomas Hanbury', 1907.
The letters have been ordered chronologically.
Open for consultation at the Lindley Library, London. Uncatalogued material in this archive may also be accessed. It is essential to check opening hours and make an appointment.
The papers were purchased on 28 Mar 2019 at Forum Auctions.
The papers were put up for auction with other lots of Comerford Casey papers including letters from Alfred Russell Wallace and John Ruskin.

He writes what his friend, the Honourable Mrs Boyle [Eleanor Vere Boyle], author of 'A Garden of Pleasure', 'Days and Hours in a Garden' and 'Ros Rasarum' ['Ros Rasarum Ex Horto Poetarum'], has to say about Casey's 'Nature Notes' ['Riviera Nature Notes']; he is delighted with what she says, as her criticism is worth having, as a lover of nature
Hanbury transcribes Boyle's words: She has not acknowledged his delightful gift sooner as she has been revelling in the pleasure of it; she likes to read slowly and savour every word of books she likes; she thanks him for sending it; she has not found a more quaint, learned and pleasantly written book, 'less mannered, less egotistic so to speak'; she has ordered three copies for friends and will probably order more; she asks who wrote it and why it is not advertised in the usual way; it is a joy to read about the beautiful Riviera and its plants, insects and creatures

He has not written for some time as his two younger sons are ill with influenza, but they are now better; his daughter [Hilda Hanbury] has not benefited as much as hoped from the mountain air of Caux [Switzerland] and returns tomorrow, and will then try San Dalmazzo di Tenda [Italy], 35 miles north of La Mortola; he has signed an agreement with Mr T. Fisher Unwin [Thomas Fisher Unwin, London publisher] for the printing of 300 copies of 'Riviera Romance', for about £40 plus extra for the engravings; he has received the three small photos that Miss Casey has made, and would like a list of what other pictures he thinks the book should have to make it attractive; he will try and find photos at Nice, Cannes or Grasse [France] to supplement what Casey's daughter may provide; on the 21st he went on a long trip up the Roya Valley [Italy] with the Empress Frederick, and they visited Airole and Olivetta, walking about a third of the distance; the empress is very clever, simple and unassuming, and he expects to go on further excursions with her; if he wants any seeds for himself or friends he should ask soon, as they are rapidly disappearing; a thousand packets have already been sent off

He will happily risk a beheading by Her Majesty for any 'unorthodox expressions' Casey has inserted in 'Romances of the Riviera', as he now has two of the queen's daughters to protect him, since Princess Louise visited them yesterday without notice for lunch and today for tea; M.W.H. Hall, author of the 'Romans on the Riviera', wrote this from St Raphael Valescure [France] to Mrs Hanbury yesterday: 'I also wish to communicate to you the intense delight I am deriving from the reading of the Riviera notes ['Riviera Nature Notes'] which Mr Hanbury was kind enough to present to me. Its combination of botany, humanity, and poetry is a rare treat. It was indeed a good work to treat the world to it. It can hardly fail to improve the quality of the minds of vacant and vulgar frequenters of the Riviera. I should hope that it will contribute to stop such brutality as pigeon shooting for instance. The writer of the work evidently knows the Esterel [Massif de l'Esterel, France]'; he is sending him a book written by Mr Scott, an English architect of Bordighera [Italy], entitled 'Rock Villages of the Riviera'

He thinks he sent him the pamphlet by Dr Verneau entitled 'L'Homme de la Barma Grande'; he wants to issue an English translation of it; he entrusted the translation to a French lady, a friend of theirs who he believes was not very capable, so he has had a lot of trouble correcting her work up to page 32; he asks if Casey would do him the favour of reading through these pages and say if they are good enough to print when the rest of the book is finished, or if he should employ another translator to do a better job; he asks him to make any suggestions or corrections; they leave for Scotland tomorrow; he has put their new address at the top of the letter

Her note informing him that the translation is nearly complete is very welcome; he has been corresponding with the printer, A.G. Lemale of Imprimerie du Commerce, Le Havre, France; Lemale is asking him for 1,250 francs for printing 2,000 copies, whereas he quoted 985 francs last January for Mr Abbo when the English edition was ready; he has complained, observing that the sale of these books is a speculation of Mr Abbo, the profit or loss on which does not concern Hanbury, so he thinks Lemale will adhere to the price quoted in January; he approves of her modifications to certain pages and the title page, as long as she does not think the words 'an account of the objects' could be confused with the words used elsewhere, 'un catalogue de cette collection'; he does not know when this catalogue will be issued and does not think he has time to compile it; they are 'sighing for rain'; one pretty wild flower that tolerates drought, Ononis minutissima, is in flower now; he encloses a small piece [enclosure present]; two fine specimens of the oleander sphinx moth were collected here in the summer and he has preserved them; he asks if she and Bertie long sometimes to revisit the south

Quaritch [bookseller] whose late father purchased from Hanbury all the remainder of the first edition and was pleased with the demand there was for it; he will soon be coming south and will try to see Casey at Parkstone to discuss it; the distinction conferred on him by the king is Knight Commander of the Victorian Order, KCVO, an honour apparently reserved for personal friends of the sovereign, there being only about 25 enjoying the distinction according to the list published by Whitaker; he cannot claim to have done much in his native country to deserve it; to mark the occasion of 'getting a handle to my name', he is proposing free return tickets for three, four or more young people to accompany him next month (about the 20th) to La Mortola [Italy] for the 'vintage' and to see the autumn colours; he thinks his niece, Enid Robinson, a particularly clever and original girl of 20, will go with him, and if Casey agrees, he would like one or both of his girls to join them, if they would like it and have time; he thinks they would like to take the opportunity to visit their former haunts

In reply to Casey's letter of the 26th he asks him to tell his daughters he is delighted that both can come; they should not feel uneasy about their vegetarian diet or clothes; when he goes to Mortola [Italy] alone in the autumn he eats little or no meat, as he prefers to live on fish, eggs, vegetables and fruit, and he is certain they can find enough of the two latter with bread, butter and jam to satisfy them; he recommends they dress plainly, and they are unlikely to meet any expensively dressed young women, 'for it is not the season for such butterflies to disport themselves on the Riviera'; his niece is a simple girl, but clever and passionately fond of natural history; he will tell her to bring dresses that will not spoil with rough usage and being out of doors all day; he and his niece come of Quaker stock, and one of the queries that had to be answered once a year was 'are Friends careful to observe plainness of speech, behaviour, and apparel?'; he has a large envelope on his table bearing the letters 'LATSL', meaning Ladies Anti Trailing Skirts League, a society he would like to start, being in agreement with the writers of the enclosed printed letter to 'The Times' [enclosure not present]; his daughters can either go with the Hanbury party on 17 Sep, travelling via Milan or Turin [Italy] to Mortola, or go alone via Southampton, Le Havre, Paris and Marseilles to Nice [France]; after visiting their old haunts in the mountains they can join the Hanburys at Mortola; he will pay all their expenses from leaving Parkstone to their return there; his son Daniel has typhoid fever, caught elsewhere, but it is not a bad case and so they are hopeful he will recover

The book of charming photographs recalling the happy time they had at the vendemmia [harvest] is the nicest present he received this Christmas; nearly all the pictures have come out well and he is particularly pleased with those of the Porta Canarda [Ventimiglia, Italy] and the old oil mill [olive mill], with the groups taken in the loggia, and with the Japanese bell and Bertie standing beside it; the house is now full and 'the overflow has gone with the cottage and the Casa Rustica'; Dan [Daniel Hanbury, Thomas Hanbury's son] and Sylvia who were married on the 12th arrived this evening after travelling from Southampton to Genoa [Italy]; Mr and Mrs Hurst [unidentified] who were married on the 21st are also here and proving enterprising in making excursions on foot, going to Mentone [Menton, France] and back on the Castello D'Appio and turning down a carriage; the annual rainfall here is about 23 inches but the figures so far this year show 46.4 inches, breaking any previous record that he has, with 15 inches in October; the lowest temperature so far this month is 44 but they are preparing for night frosts next month; he has sent a list to the 'Gardeners' Chronicle' of fifty of the more remarkable plants now in blossom out of doors, they will probably see it in the issue of 4 Jan; he wonders what their father will make of 'Letters from John Chinaman' that he sent him; his friend Mr Cuthbertson, secretary to Lord Salisbury, says it is 'one of the cleverest things he has ever seen and worth reading for the prose alone'; he urges them to read it, and not to be startled by the 'perfectly hideous' cover

He was pleased by her letter of the 10th, and the amusing card about prehistoric man, which he gave to Madame Verneau this afternoon to amuse her husband, who has been working hard for three weeks on the skeletons at the Barma Grande [Barma Grande cave, Grimaldi, Ventimiglia, Italy]; he has patched and restored them, and is covering the bones with a preparation of gelatine to protect them from the atmosphere; he thanks her for the excellent leaflet on dress; like her he has failed to make many converts, but he has not tried very hard to make converts to the Ladies' Anti Trailing Skirts League: he suggests the league should 'convert your own ladies first and then we will listen to you'; he has given away 50 copies of 'Riviera Nature Notes', and hopes to gift many more; he wrote to her father to ask if he could give her and Bertie [Bertie Comerford Casey, her sister] Christmas presents, but as he did not answer he encloses them [enclosures not present]; Signor Vernazza expects to finish the great fresco on their loggia by 15 Jan; the subject is the passage of Charles V of Germany through the Porta Canarda [Ventimiglia, Italy] in 1536; they were visited by burglars in the night, who tried to kill their guard dog with bamboo sticks; the dog was saved by a servant who heard a blow land on the metal roof of the kennel, and scared the burglars away; he will have someone sleep in the hall, and take other precautions to avoid a repeat occurrence; they have had six inches of rain this month; he has a pet mantis which he feeds daily

Dr Masters [Maxwell T. Masters] has written thanking him for a copy of 'Riviera Nature Notes': 'I have read the book from cover to cover, an almost unparallelled feat with me nowadays when I have such a mass of literature of some sort or another to skim'; he could not have a better testimony as to its worth; an excellent portrait of Dr A.R. Wallace [Alfred Russel Wallace, naturalist] is in this week's issue of 'The Garden'

Casey will see from the enclosed letter [enclosure not present] that Professor Penzig [Albert Julius Otto Penzig, professor of botany at University of Genoa, Italy] has spent a lot of time researching Hedera and Smilax and he is of the opinion that 'the former is the true bacchic[?] ivy'; he cannot challenge this opinion and, unless Casey sees any reason to doubt his conclusions, he will concede and apologise for having jumping to a conclusion too hastily; however when he thanks Penzig he will tell him that, as he carefully read the final edition, he ought to have told Hanbury that he had made a mistake in his footnote on page 282; he asks if Casey knows Professor Strasburger's book on the Riviera ['Rambles on the Riviera' by Eduard Strasburger]; he has the first edition in German but not the second one with coloured illustrations; he has told Mr Fisher Unwin [Thomas Fisher Unwin, London publisher] that he believes the translation would not have a chance of competing with 'Riviera Nature Notes' except at half price; as Casey has said he is looking for work, Hanbury asks if he would like to undertake the translation, if Unwin decides to have it done; Hanbury had an audience of about 200 when he lectured at Sanremo [Italy] yesterday on 'some walks round my garden'

While visiting the wholesale importing houses in the China trade, he discovered a bundle of Chinese embroidered plaited [pleated] skirts, of which he bought three; one is for Enid [Enid Robinson, Thomas Hanbury's niece], the other two he sends to Olive and Bertie as a remembrance of Isa's [unidentified] wedding where they all wore Chinese or Japanese garments; the deep olive green is for Olive, and the yellow for Bertie; he is not sure that they will be useful as he supposes they would not be considered appropriate in Bournemouth; in China such things are not seen for sale, as the embroidery is done in the families of the ladies wearing them, so it is possible they have been used; they are enjoying the fine summer, which is very different from that of 1903; the chickenina and her mother [?Isabella, unidentified] have gone to the mountains for July and August; he gives her address; he has invited Enid to accompany him to the Channel Islands after the marriage of Lady Hanbury's sister which is to take place at Frenchay in Bristol on the 27th; he is taking with him the marriage certificate to show that in the year 1714, his great great grandfather married Elizabeth Newton in the same meeting house, without the intervention of priest of minister; Camillo [Isabella's husband, unidentified] and his father were both ruined by the cruelty of the Fratelli[?] Cassinio[?] of Turin [Italy], the old general dying soon after; a nemesis has overtaken these bankers, with both brothers being arrested and put in prison the other day after a disgraceful bankruptcy; one was the British consul at Turin

It is good of him to have sent his charming 'Legend of the Firefly'; she and Sir Thomas think it very pretty and regret that he did not publish it in 'Nature Notes' ['Riviera Nature Notes'] as it should be shared with others; she commends specific parts of the story and likens one part to a passage in Dante; her daughter was visiting the Grant Duffs this week and Sir Mountstuart [Sir Mountstuart Grant Duff] expressed his appreciation of 'Nature Notes', especially the new edition; she does not know what modern advertising journal is responsible for his 'Latin' quotation; she asks to be remembered kindly to Mrs Casey and their daughters; Sir Thomas is away for the day

He was pleased to get her note; he wishes he could write something clever and original in her album, but hopes she will be content with a quotation; he has not read the 'Great and Good' and so cannot be responsible for its contents; her father told him that he had spent years over the book and was sad to see it consigned to the flames; his aid is an act of private friendship; he hopes the work may do good and not harm; Katharine [Katharine Hanbury, Thomas Hanbury's wife] knows 'Picciola', which must be an interesting tale, but he does not; he has hardly any time to read romance; the 'gigantic drama' of the war in the East [Russo-Japanese War, 1904-1905] takes up his attention, and it is awful to think of it continuing into next year; Isabella went with her little girl to see her mother and sister Giuseppina Porcari in the summer; he heard distressing news this morning that the child has caught typhoid fever at Tesi per Rosora Marke[?], and has been ill for six days; they have a doctor but no chemist nearby; he was against Isa making the long journey and told her so; he intends to head for Mortola [Italy] next Monday, and will travel via Turin [Italy]; the quarrel between the curator and head gardener is over, but he fears it is only a truce; he asks her to tell her father that they had found the bad pun in 'Paradisus in Sole' ['Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris', by John Parkinson, which can be translated as 'The Earthly Paradise of Park-in-Sun'] before his card came

He thanks her for her last note, 'written under difficulties'; Bertie was in bed when she wrote but he hopes to hear from her too before long; it is the last day of the year when he usually asks himself what good he has done in the past twelve months; he fears this time the answer is 'a very paltry record of anything of much use to mankind'; he is expecting an answer from their father about the translation of Strasburger's book ['Rambles on the Riviera' by Eduard Strasburger]; if he is 'hardly strong enough to understand it', he suggests she and Bertie might do it, as it could be a means of their earning a little money; his brother Barclay [Barclay Hanbury], who built a home at Sanremo [Italy], has let it and with his wife and only daughter is at Bournemouth where they know no one; the address is Cornellyn, Brunstead Road, Bournemouth, and if she happens to be in that area he asks if she would kindly call; his brother had two or three strokes years ago so is not able to converse much, and his wife has a weak heart and is more or less an invalid; Olive [?their daughter] is a pretty girl of 21, who likes bicycling, but she is not clever, and is shy; he wishes them health and happiness in 1905

When Casey described his book as producing 'such a howl of anger and disapprobation', Hanbury thought he must have submitted it to 'many who are stupid or prejudiced', so he has pleasure in enclosing a critique [enclosure not present] of Mr Hubert Morgan-Browne, who he met less than a month ago and had no interest in writing to please him; he is pleased that Morgan-Browne describes the 'Great and Good' as an admirable book and ends by saying 'that the book is one of the most convincing and helpful contributions to the improvement of popular notions of religion, theology and human conduct that it has been my lot to meet'; after this commendation Hanbury is ordering five more copies to give away; he expects Casey will like the open letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury, which occasioned ill feeling against its author and pecuniary loss to him; he wants to visit them all soon but cannot plan a day yet

He thanks him for Alwin Berger's 'Sukkulente Euphorbien', which is excellent in matter, style and illustration; he has received Eduard Strasburger's 'Rambles on the Riviera' through his kindness, and has read the first hundred pages with 'extraordinary interest and pleasure'; it is fascinating and full of information that is new to him, especially 'on the classical side'; he remarks how accomplished Strasburger is, and that no other living botanist could elucidate the 'almost prehistoric history of useful and ornamental plants'; he comments on the wonderful tributes to the scientific minds and garden labour of Hanbury and his dear late brother [Daniel Hanbury]; the early histories of sugar and sugar cane and of the orange tribe are very instructive; Strasburger's style is quite exciting, and it is hard to put the book down; Strasburger paid him a visit two months ago; Hooker has long been tempted to visit La Mortola [Italy] but never so much as now; his health is not what it was, he is very deaf and eczema is a worry, though a bearable one; Lady Hooker sends her kindest regards to him and Lady Hanbury

He owes her a reply to two letters that ought to have been answered long ago; he was expecting to hear of her return to Lantosca and has written to Maria Bonetti to ask for Olive's present address, if she knows it; they are all together for Christmas except Horace [Horace Hanbury, Thomas Hanbury's son] who is in Shanghai [China]; their festivities are of an extremely mild character as 'undue eating and drinking, not to say riotous living' would soon affect him; he is fairly well but aware of declining strength due to age, as he will be 75 on the 21 Jun, 'if I live so long'; 'Rambles on the Riviera' is proving a great success and people are very satisfied with her translation of the book; he has a flattering letter about it from 'old Sir Joseph Hooker' which he will show her; he would copy it out for her if it were not so long; he has given away over 30 copies and is ordering 10 more from London; Cooks have agreed to sell it at all their offices along the Riviera; Miss Willmott [Ellen Willmott] has been here for over a month, and has been gardening on a grand scale at her newly acquired property two miles to the east; he thinks she has planted about 20,000 palms, shrubs and 'small things'; the weather is fairly mild with no frost yet but he has heard that all the carnations between Ventimiglia and Bordighera have been killed by frost; his brother Barclay's [Barclay Hanbury] only son died on the 17th, of late he had to live at a 'home' away from Brunstead Road, Bournemouth

He is writing on New Year's Day to send best wishes for their happiness; he did not know that their stay at Davos would be so prolonged, and supposes they did not know themselves; he hopes his letter to Olive was forwarded from Lantosca [Upper Parkstone, Dorset]; he has given away about 30 copies of 'Rambles on the Riviera', and it has been well received, and their translation is universally praised; 'old Sir Joseph Hooker, now nearly 90 years old, is quite enthusiastic over it'; he would send them his letter to read but thinks they may have left before this reaches Davos; they had Miss Willmott [Ellen Willmott] here for a month, but she went to England for Christmas; 'she has begun gardening on a grand scale two miles east of this, on the road to Ventimiglia. Some 20,000 plants have been put in by the aid of a small army of labourers under her daily supervision. She scorned the aid of any horticulturist or head gardener'; she plans to return next month to continue; they had a slight frost recently but the damage was negligible; they are threatened with an enlargement of the railway between Mentone [Menton, France] and Ventimiglia, and with a tramline to join the French and Italian systems; they dread the latter more than the former; on Christmas Day there were about 400 species of plants in flower, but he did not have a complete list made; the frost was more severe elsewhere and the price of roses, carnations, etc has gone up; this year he hopes to devote his attention to making a garden for the town of Ventimiglia and he has already made the first payment for acquiring the land needed at the mouth of the Roya; his brother Barclay [Barclay Hanbury] lost his only son very suddenly on the 17th

He encloses a letter from Auntie Gabby, received last month [enclosure not present]; he was sad to see the news in the paper today of Thomas Hanbury's death; she and Bertie will have more cause to lament as they knew him so well; he finds it hard to express what he feels, and has a right to shed tears at the death of a friend who has spent his life doing so much good for others; they may grieve for those left behind but not for him, as he will be deservedly happy in heaven; he believes that in the hereafter they will enjoy communion with him, when the barriers of time and space are gone, and hopes she and Bertie can take comfort from these thoughts as well; he quotes a poem ['Our Classmate' by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr]; he is sorry he does not have time to express all that he feels or would like to say, but he has a lot of work to do; he asks that she tell Bertie and their mother that he is sorry he does not have time to write to them; if she can find anything their father needs or wants, for four or five shillings, he asks her to get it for his birthday, and he will give her the money; this letter must do for Bertie as well as her, as he has no time to write separately; he is sorry he has not been able to write to Bertie more often; he asks her to tell their mother not to bother with the golf club or stockings, as golf is 'on the wane'

Her letter has come as a shock, and she feels sympathy for them all at this sad moment; it is comforting to hear that her father's [George Edwards Comerford Casey] last days were peaceful; she supposes she is thankful that his suffering is ended; she is reminded of Walt Whitman's 'Joy, Shipmate, Joy' from 'Songs of Parting', and quotes it; it must have been helpful that he was conscious and happy in his last days, and they can be consoled by how devoted they were in tending to him; she hopes that she and her mother will be able to rest, although the house must seem sad and empty; she has heard today from Hilda [Hilda Hanbury, Thomas and Katharine Hanbury's daughter] about poor Signora Bonetti, as Hilda is in Rome and Maria has visited her in the nursing home, where Hilda is also staying, to see the nurses she is having trained; Signora Bonetti is in one of the private rooms there; Maria is not allowed to sleep there, and she is with her friends the Ferraris, but spends the day with her mother; Hilda says that Maria seems quiet and calm, though she has had a terribly distressing time, with Signora Bonetti's 'sad malady' having returned after her operation two years ago; the doctors do not advise another operation; she does not suffer much, apart from neuralgia and general discomfort and lowered appetite, and is not in immediate danger, but no one can foresee the course of the illness; she asks that if Olive writes to Maria she does not mention what she has told her, though she believes she has little if any hope; she thinks she would like to hear from her, and gives her address; Renzo[?] has obtained special leave and is also in Rome; Olive must be occupied with many things, but she asked for news of Signora Bonetti; it has been a very wet season, despite sunshine; it is sad to hear that the severe weather has had such fatal consequences 'with you'; she sends her sympathy to her mother and love to Bertie and herself; Cecil [Cecil Hanbury, Thomas and Katharine Hanbury's son] has asked her to convey his sympathy
