William Alexander Liston (1908-1962) was born in Bombay and educated at Edinburgh, Oundle and Cambridge University, qualifying in medicine at Edinburgh in 1933. He later passed the examination for the higher diplomas of all three Royal Colleges. After war service he became a consultant at the Edinburgh Royal infirmary and also worked at the Edinburgh Medical school and for the Edinburgh Obstetrical Society. William Glen Liston, his son, worked with him in his research.
Presented to the College museum by William Glen Liston in 1939 and passed to the College Archives at an unknown date.
Papers relating to the research of William Liston and his son, W G Liston, on Trichomonas vaginitis, an inflammation of the vagina, marked by a purulent discharge, including original illustrations and a letter to the RCOG.

Original drawings, published by W G Liston and William A Liston in 'A Study of Trichomonas Vaginitis in Hospital Practice in Edinburgh', and signed by C Shepley, covering two different cases of December 1938 and March 1939. The illustrations show fixed and stained cultures from the male and female.

Ms letter from William Alexander Liston to Aleck Bourne, Honorary Curator of the College Museum, describing the context to drawings sent in response to an invitation to supply something for the Museum in connection with his work on Trichomonas vaginitis, including notes on the preparation of microscopic slides, his findings in connection with Trichomonas, the sociological and medico-legal consequences of these findings, and the treatment of patients in Edinburgh under the Venereal Diseases Act.
