The E.A. Milne Society was founded by Milne's granddaughter, Miranda Weston-Smith, in January 1977 to commemorate the work of Professor Edward Arthur Milne (1896-1950) mathematician and natural philosopher - see
Dictionary of National Biography. Miranda Weston-Smith acted as secretary and treasurer to the Society while Sir Hermann Bondi and others served as the committee and the Warden of Wadham as patron of the Society. The Society established an annual Milne lecture given at the Mathematical Institute, Oxford, under the patronage of Wadham College and the Mathematical Institute, and with the sponsorship of IBM (UK). The inaugural Milne lecture was delivered by Sir Fred Hoyle in January 1978. Most of the lectures were published after delivery in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society. The Society continued until 1996, the centenary year of Milne's birth, when the twentieth and final lecture was delivered by Sir Roger Penrose. All twenty lectures were published, with some alterations and addenda, as The Universe Unfolding (Oxford, 1998), edited by Sir Hermann Bondi and Miranda Weston-Smith.
