1974 General Election
There were two elections in 1974. The first was held on 28th February. The Conservation party had 11,872,180 votes (37.9) and 297 MPs, while the Labour party had 11, 645,616 votes (37.2) and 301 MPs, which created a minority government for the Labour party. The second election was held in October. The Labour party had 11,457,079 votes (39.2) while the Conservative party had 10,462,565 votes (35.8). It was Labour leader Harold Wilson's (1916 - 1995) fourth success in a general election. The leader of the Conservative party, Edward Heath (b. 1916) was challenged and replaced as party leader by Margaret Thatcher (b. 1925) in 1975.
