The guild of St Mary the Virgin in Holy Trinity church was one of several religious guilds that thrived in Hull before the Reformation. They derived their income from rents and spent it on a chaplain's salary and the expenses of masses and other religious services for members. Many of the religious guilds were craft-specific, but the guild of St Mary the Virgin appears to have been informally attached to the Hull Corporation in the sense that the town's mayors were often the guild aldermen and it is likely that many members of the Corporation were members of this religious guild too (Sheahan, History of...Hull, p.431; Pugh, The city of Kingston upon Hull, p.84).
