The Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition was held in the new Technical School and Mechanics' Institute building, in Queen Street South, Huddersfield. Opened on 7 July 1883 by the Duke of Somerset, the Exhibition included displays relating to local and regional industry as well as nationally important works of art, examples of modern technology, historic documents and photographs. Total receipts from the six months duration of the Exhibition exceeded £13,000 and it was visited by 329,639 people, including the Duke and Duchess of Albany.

The collection gives detailed information about local industry and art, together with the subscribers and organisers of this important exhibition.
