The papers are relating to the Griffithstown School Board. School Boards were established under the Elementary Education Act 1870 in areas with inadequate voluntary school provision and could raise a local rate to pay for new schools. The School Boards were elected bodies, empowered to levy rates and to set up and maintain schools in areas where voluntary provision was inadequate.
