Macphail was born in
c1853. He
gained his MB CM (Honours) from the
University of
Glasgow, Scotland, in
1877, gaining his MD from
the University in
1881. He was a surgeon at
the
Alexander Hospital, Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire,
Scotland and later Assistant Physician at the
City of Glasgow Fever Hospital and then House
Physician at the
Glasgow Western Infirmary. He died in
August 1931 at the age of
77.
