Whitbread & Co Ltd of London, founded in
1742 , had
been shipping significant quantities of beer to Scotland from their English
breweries since the beginning of the 20th century. The company acquired a
significant minority shareholding in
Archibald Campbell, Hope & King , brewers in
Edinburgh, in 1964, and acquired the company and its thirty-six pubs in
1967 . The
following year, Whitbread acquired the brewer,
John Young Ltd of Musselburgh, and its subsidiary,
Olympic Bars Ltd . The Scottish pubs were sold to
Watney Mann Ltd .
John Young's Brewery was closed in
1968 , and the
Argyle Brewery acquired with Archibald Campbell Hope & King was closed in
1971 . In
1975 Whitbread
acquired
Long John International Ltd , a spirits company
which owned Scotch whisky brands such as Laphroaig and Long John. The business
was sold to
Allied Domecq in
1991 .
Whitbread sold its brewing interests to
Interbrew in
2000 .
The collection consists of corporate records and shareholding records
relating to Whitbread & Co Ltd. Includes:
- Corporate records, 1954-1980;
- Shareholding records, 1966-1969.
The material is arranged according to the Scottish Brewing Archive
classification scheme used within all SBA collections.
Custody of the Scottish Brewing Archive was transferred to Glasgow
University Archive Services in 2008.
