Administrative history
Thomas Mackenzie Donn was born in Govan on 1 Oct 1907. His father, John
Donn, was a postman. Prior to attending university, Thomas was a student at
Bellahouston Academy. Thomas attended the University of Glasgow from 1926-1929,
taking classes in Moral Philosophy (Ordinary), French (Ordinary) and English
(Ordinary) in his first year; Mathematics (Ordinary), History (Ordinary),
English (Higher Ordinary) and Italian in his second, and Political Economics,
Greek and Herbrew in his third year. He graduated with an MA in June 1929 and
subsequently studied theology at
Trinity College,
Glasgow, from 1929-1932.
He returned to the University of Glasgow from 1930-1932, taking classes
in Political Philosophy and Social Economics, Political Economics (Honours) and
Economic history in his fourth year, and Divinity and Ecclesiastical History in
his fifth and final year. He was ordained in March 1932 and subsequently served
as a minister in Stornoway (1932-1934), Rosehall, Sutherland (1934-45), and
Carrbridge and Duthil, Strathspey (1945-1969). In May 2010, he became the
longest ordained Church of Scotland minister, having been ordained more than 78
years ago. He died in Inverness on 14 September 2011, aged 104.
