When railway companies promoted Bills in Parliament to authorise the construction of lines and associated matters they were obliged to submit full details of the property affected in plans accompanied by a book of reference.
The two volumes listed here contain copies of the books of reference for 1881-1887 and 1898-1900 for Bills submitted by the Great Northern Railway. They are marked as belonging to the Surveyor.
The plans show the proposed route of the line or other works and the book of reference identifies the nature of the property which was to be acquired, the current owners, leasees and occupiers.

The Doncaster Locomotive Works (locally known as 'the Plant') were established in Doncaster by the Great Northern Railway in 1853, when its repair shops were moved to the town from Boston, Lincolnshire. The location appears to have been chosen by Edmund Denison M P (later Beckett), the chairman of the company, on account of his own residence in the town. A history of the work can be found in Philip S Bagwell, Doncaster Town of Train Makers 1853-1990 (Doncaster, 1991).
Including:
Employees: Locomotive Department 1897-1966;
Employees: Carriage and Wagon Department 1908-1935

Piece Work Prices 1925, 1948-1967

The records catalogued here were rescued from the works premises after rejection for permanent preservation by the National Railway Museum, York

All but one of the plans catalogued here are copies of the plans and sections submitted with Parliamentary Bills to obtain permission to build railway lines. They would have been accompanied by a book of reference which identified by number on the plans the description of the land and its owners. Parliamentary standing orders obliged promoters of schemes to be approved by Act of Parliament to submit these plans and books of reference by the end of November preceding the Parliamentary session in which they were to be considered. (At that time the Parliamentary session ran from January to June; there was no autumn sittings until the early twentieth century.)
All the plans catalogued here were accumulated by the Doncaster Library Service, mostly through purchase from unidentified sources and one was inherited from the former West Riding of Yorkshire County Library
Some books of reference to GNR [Great Northern Railway] Parliamentary Bills between 1881-1887 and 1898-1902 can be found at DY/BRB/3.
Copies of all the railway plans and books of reference for the West Riding of Yorkshire can be found at the Wakefield Headquarters office of the West Yorkshire Archive Service
