The county of Montgomeryshire in mid Wales, along the border with England, was created in 1536 when Henry VIII brought the province of Powys fully under the administration of the British crown. Today, as a result of local government reorganisation what was the historic county of Montgomeryshire is now administered as the county unit of Powys.
