LETTER: Hugh and Mary Hughes to their son William Hughes 9 Edmond St., Liverpool. Hugh complains about his son John, who is at school in Liverpool staying with W.H. He also complains about the tenants in Liverpool staying with W.H. He also complains about the tenants in Liverpool who are slow in paying their rent. He is going to appeal against property tax for the houses as he does not earn £60 a year. He was glad to hear that W.H. had let all the houses but complains that he needs a workman all year round to attend to the repairs. He quotes a letter from his son Richard in San Francisco Richard has spent time mining for gold, but did not have much luck, so he went to San Francisco and formed a partnership to buy a boat which carried 4 tons for which they paid $1300. After a month they sold the boat for $1600 in cash and bought another boat which carried 12 tons for which they paid $2500, and need $1000 to fit her out. They had earned $800 from the first boat. Richard has been lucky: he has now repaid his loan and bought his partner's half share in the boat. Hugh concludes that if John does not study at Liverpool, then W.H. should send him to sea.
