Christmas 2001

  • Carmichael-Watson Collection folklorists Alexander Carmichael, Professor William John Watson, and others, collected Scottish folksong, including Christmas carols.
  • Robert Donat (1905-1958) Manchester-born stage and screen actor, who produced "the first real children's pantomime" at St James' Theatre in December 1944.
  • Baron George Porter (b.1920), Director of the Royal Institute 1966-1985, and presenter of the Royal Institute's Christmas Lectures 1969/1970 and 1976/1977.
  • Alison Uttley (1884-1976) Derbyshire-born author, whose books for children include Little Grey Rabbit's Christmas, Grey Rabbit and the snow baby, and Squirrel goes skating.
  • Valentines of Dundee Ltd Christmas card manufacturers established in 1851 (and still in business today as a subsidiary of John Waddington Ltd).
