Scope and Content

This collection consists of minute books from 1894 - 1924, a photograph albumof members of the circle, 1912, a membership list, nd, and membership lists,correspondence with members, papers relating to the distribution of thecircle and subsequent correspondence about its records, 1929 - 1966.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Rainbow Circle was a liberal discussion group founded by William Clarke(1852 - 1901), JA Hobson (1858 - 1940), Reverend Percy Dearmer (1867 -1936), James Ramsey MacDonald (1866 - 1937), John Archibald MacDonald (fl1894), Burrows (1845 - 1921) and others. It met at the Rainbow tavern inFleet Street and the evening consisted of a dinner followed by a talk by oneof the members and a discussion by the whole group. The talks generallyconcerned politics, economics and ethics.
