Sir William Henry Clark 1876-1952

Clark was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He began hiscareer as a clerk at the Board of Trade in 1899. He was Secretary to theSpecial Mission to Shanghai to negotiate a Commercial Treaty with China,1901. Clark went on to become acting 2nd secretary in Diplomatic Service,1902. He was also secretary to Royal Commission on Supply of Food, etc., inTime of War, 1903-1905. Clark was private secretary at Board of Trade toDavid Lloyd George (1863-1945), 1906; and to Winston Churchill (1874-1965),1908; and to Lloyd George as Chancellor of Exchequer, 1908-1910. Clark wasalso the Member for Commerce and Industry of the Council of the Viceroy ofIndia, 1910-1916; Comptroller-General, Commercial Intelligence Department ofBoard of Trade, 1916-1917; Comptroller-General of Department of OverseasTrade, 1917-1928. Clark was High Commissioner in Canada for HM Government inUnited Kingdom, 1928-1934; HM High Commissioner for Basutoland, BechuanalandProtectorate and Swaziland, and High Commissioner in Union of South Africafor HM Government in UK, 1934-1939. He retired in 1940.
