Papers of Frederic Seebholm

Scope and Content

The collection comprises of some correspondence between Seebholm and colleagues. There are also transcripts, and notebooks containing notes on a wide range of historical subjects, taken from various historical sources, 1800-1888.

Administrative / Biographical History

Frederic Seebholm was born in Bradford on 23 November 1833. After studying at Bootham School, York, Seebholm read law and became a barrister in 1856. He published works on various historical subjects including The Oxford Reformers 1867, The English Village Community 1883, The Tribal System in Wales 1895 and Tribal Custom in Anglo Saxon Law, 1902. He was awarded honorary degrees from the universities of Edinburgh, Oxford and Cambridge for his work. Seebholm was still at work when he died in Hitchin, Hertfordshire on 6 February 1912.
