Also includes Alan Denson's correspondence with David Halliwell c1960s-1980s; Phoebe Hesketh c1960s-c1990; Herbert Howarth c1950s-c1970s, Susan Miles poems and correspondence, c1920s-c1980s; John Wright papers regarding his career as a composer, 1938-1952. Also Sir Patrick Hannon autobiographical notes, 1961-2.

Herbert Edward Palmer was born in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. He was educated at Woodhouse Grove School, Birmingham University, and Bonn University. He became a full-time writer and journalist in 1921. He had previously led an itinerant life in teaching, tutoring and lecturing, working in particular for the Workers' Educational Association. Herbert Palmer spent a significant period in France and Germany. He also encouraged the young John Gawsworth.

Alan Denson was Herbert Palmer's literary executor and the author of Herbert Edward Palmer (1880-1961) : a bio-bibliographical survey and calendar of recordings (1994).
