Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
7:84 Theatre Company was originally founded in Scotland in 1971 by playwright John McGrath, his wife Elizabeth MacLennan and her brother David MacLennan. Its name derived from the 1966 statistic stating that 7% of the population of Great Britain owned 84 % of the wealth. The group split into 7:84 (England) and 7:84 (Scotland) in 1973. The English group terminated in 1984 following the loss of its grant from the Arts Council Great Britan.
