Scope and Content

The majority of the material consists of 24 letters sent by Kenneth Armitage to A. E. Walker, his teacher at school (1938-1971). The letters discuss his thoughts on art, his work and studies, his experiences in the army, and other personal news. A letter to Kathleen, Edgar, and Angela Walker is also included. The letters are accompanied by seven press cuttings (1952-1972) referring to Armitage, and possibly sent by A. E. Walker to Armitage.

The material also includes:

one letter from Randolph Schwabe, Slade School of Fine Art, to Armitage, agreeing to see Armitage and his work (1945);

one letter from Clifford Ellis, Bath School of Art, regarding the appointment of teachers at the school (1945);

testimonials from F. R. Worts (City of Leeds School), Randolph Schwabe (Slade School of Fine Art), A. H. Gerrard (Slade School of Fine Art), D. S. Andrews (City of Leeds College of Art), Lieutenant-Colonel Buckland (10th Royal Artillery Training Regiment);

one copy of a curriculum vitae for Armitage;

and one private view card for 'Drawings by Kenneth Armitage', The Mayor Gallery, London (1947).
