Drawings by John Trivett Nettleship

The collection contains seventeen original drawings, mostly in pencil, with some in ink or watercolour. There are also nine autotype copies of drawings. The subject matter consists chiefly of human figures. In addition, there is one pencil drawing by Edwin John Ellis, dated 1872.

John Trivett Nettleship was born in Kettering, Northants. on February 11th 1841. He gave up a career in the law to become an art student, studying at Heatherley's art school and at the Slade. During the 1870s he was part of the group of artists called 'The Brotherhood', of which the other members were John Butler Yeats, George Wilson and Edwin John Ellis.Nettleship was best known for his paintings of animals, displayed at exhibitions in London and elsewhere. He also contributed illustrations to several books, and published essays on the poems of Robert Browning. He died in London on August 31st 1902.
