Scope and Content

1. Letters from The Hogarth Press (1937-51). Includes: signed covering letter from Leonard Woolf (5 November 1937) enclosing 'two copies of the agreement' for the publication of 'The Border-Line' (agreement not present); statements of account for Journey to the Border for various years; and various administrative letters, most from John Lehmann, with two letters signed Barbara Hepworth.

2. Seven letters (1942-44, and undated) from John Lehmann relating to The Penguin New Writing. With a single letter (1938) from John J. Trounstine of New York, having seen an excerpt of Upward's work in New Writing, and keen to secure an American publisher.

3. Three letters (1948-49) from James Laughlin, publisher of New Directions (New York), referring to his publication of 'The Railway Accident'. With a New Directions catalogue (1947), and a letter (1950) to Laughlin from the American Civil Liberties Union for onward transmission to Upward thanking him for gifting his royalties to the Union (includes receipt).

4. Various letters (1952-61) from several publishers.
