Scope and Content

Chapters 8-16 of a typescript heavily-revised in blue ink.

The individual sheets (many of which include autograph material on the verso) are ordered and numbered on the recto by the author as follows:

  • [Chapter 8]: sheet without number (autograph manuscript beginning 'The traffic multiplied') continuing on the verso and onto two manuscript continuation sheets numbered on the recto and verso 3-6, 66-69, 70, 70A, 71.
  • [Chapter 9]: sheet without number (autograph manuscript beginning 'This pleasant domestic idyll'), 72A, 72-80.
  • Chapter 10: 81-2, 82A, 83-97.
  • Chapter 11: 97-104.
  • Chapter 12: 104, 104A, 104B, 104C, 105D, 105E, 105F, 105G, 105-11.
  • Chapter 13: 111-23.
  • Chapter 14: 124-32.
  • Chapter 15: 132-43.
  • Chapter 16: 143, 143A, 143B, 144-52.

NB The conclusion of chapter 16 as published is on 152, but there is additional text (struck-through) on 153 in Add MS 88938/3/8/1/3.
