Scope and Content

G. K. CHESTERTON PAPERS. VOL. CXXIX A. Fragmentary stories, a play and poems, mostly early, and sketches, mostly later; circa 1880-1892. Includes part of a story of King John (f. 72v vol. rev.) with a coloured drawing of John and the Papal Legate (f. 70v vol. rev.), part of a story published as 'In 1661' in C.W., vol. 14, pp. 601-604 (ff. 70-65v vol. rev.), fragment of a play (f. 54 vol. rev.) and a further page of prose with the same characters set in the Scotland of King Charles II (f. 62v vol. rev.), the opening of a very early story entitled 'The roling [sic] stone and other tales' (ff. 2-2v), poem beginning "Nigh on twice a thousand springs" (published as 'Man's divine equality' in C.W., vol. 10, p. 230) (ff. 10v-11), poem beginning "I will not lift my voice to thee" (f. 6v), poem 'The real anthem' (published in C.W., vol. 10, p. 406) (f. 12), beginning of a story set in the London of King Charles II (ff. 29-29v). While the use of the word 'King' in 'The real anthem' suggests a date after 1901, the context and handwriting appear to be of the 1890s. Text commences at both ends.
