Newspaper and radio contributions

Scope and Content

The sub-fonds is divided into two series; Calvin Wells' columns for East Anglian newspaper the 'Eastern Daily Press' and his scripts for local and national radio. The first series holds articles written by Wells for the 'Eastern Daily Press' under the pen-name 'Calliphon'. It also holds typescript versions and handwritten copies of prospective articles which were never published. The articles cover myriad subject matter, including medical news, politics, history, art and architecture, and travel. Although no formal bibliography of 'Calliphon' articles exists it is likely that the collection holds a copy of every article published in the 'Eastern Daily Press'. Included in the series are several readers' letters written in response to various 'Calliphon' articles.

Most of the material related to Wells' radio contributions are either handwritten or typed scripts. Evidence suggests that Wells' radio scripts were written mainly for broadcast on East Anglia's VHF (very high frequency) service, which began operations in February 1957. Evidently Wells would have been one of the earliest contributors to the station with his lecture on 'The Red Castle Mystery' which was broadcast in August of that year.
