Lanchester maintains that Sir Henry Fowler is a “Locomotive man” and his subject is not automobile engineering. He thinks that Fowler may have obtained his historical account of the automobile from a “blackmail” publication (i.e. a history of the industry compiled on the basis of the subscribers supplying information and at the same time undertaking to buy volumes; Lanchester says that he supplied one such with information but as he did not buy any copies the information was left out and Lanchester was not mentioned).
