This joint stock bank was established in 1834. It expanded by acquiring other banks, or parts of them, beginning in 1840 with most branches of the failed Southern District Banking Co. (est. 1836). Subsequent acquisitions were largely of private banks: Wickham & Co. (est. 1807) of Winchester in 1854; Heath & Co. (est. 1790) of Andover in 1861; Atkins & Sons (est. 1818) of Portsmouth in 1863; Raggett, Seymour & Co. (est. 1806) of Basingstoke and Odiham in 1864; Le Neveu, Sorel & Co. (est. 1862), otherwise known as the English & Jersey Union Bank, in 1873; and de Carteret & Co. (est. 1846), otherwise styled the Jersey Joint Stock Bank, also in 1873. The Hampshire Banking Co. merged with the North Wilts Banking Co. in 1877. At the time it had 44 branches, located throughout Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and London. The firm was renamed Capital & Counties Bank in 1878.
