Brooks & Company (81 Lombard Street)

Scope and Content

Records of Brooks & Company relating to the operation of the bank, and its amalgamation with Lloyds Bank, including salary books and agreement for sale of the business.

Administrative / Biographical History

The origins of this bank are unclear. It is likely that it started out in around 1815 as Cunliffe, Brooks & Co. of Lombard Street, City of London, which acted as the London agent of Cunliffe, Brooks & Co. (est. 1792) of Blackburn, Lancashire. In 1864 the business, by then known as Roger Cunliffe & Co., was acquired by the London discount house A. & G. W. Alexander & Co. At this point the London banking business was reconstituted as Brooks & Co. It continued to have close links with the Blackburn bank, and was acquired by Lloyds Bank in 1900.
