This joint-stock bank was formed in 1831 in Gloucester. In the same year it acquired the private bank of Hartland & Co. (est. 1809) of Tewkesbury, which also had offices at Cheltenham, Evesham and Stroud. The senior partner of this bank, Nathaniel Hartland, became a leading manager in the Gloucestershire Banking Co. Another important figure was Samuel Baker, a Bristol shipowner and merchant. Russell & Skey (est. 1809) of Gloucester was acquired in 1832; James Wood (est 1716) of Gloucester in 1836; Cripps & Co. (est. 1796) of Cirencester with a branch at Stow, in 1842; J W R Hall (est. 1836) of Ross in 1858; and Webb & Co. (est. 1790) of Ledbury in 1883. Later, branches were opened at Ledbury, Cirencester, Tewkesbury, Evesham, Stow, Cheltenham, Newnham, Stroud, Ross, Lydney, Moreton in the Marsh, Coleford, Hereford, Newent, Monmouth, Redditch, Evesham and Abergavenny. Limited liability was acquired in 1873. The bank merged with Capital & Counties Bank (est. 1877) in 1886.
