Scope and Content

Scrapbook folder divided into subject headings: Physical Training, Hygiene, Dancing and Ballet, Theory of Education, Pathology, Swimming, and Tennis.
Primarily contains press cuttings relating to these subjects but also manuscript study notes; examination papers for The Royal Institute of Public Health & Hygiene Certificate Examination (1938), the Chartered Society of Massage & Medical Gymnastics Conjoint Examination and Examination in Anatomy and Physiology (1940), the University of London Examination for Diploma in Theory and Practice of Physical Education: Anatomy, Physiology, Hygiene, Principles & Processes of Education, and Theory of Gymnastics (1940); Examination Regulations for the Chartered Society of Massage & Medical Gymnastics and the University of London Examination for Diploma in Theory and Practice of Physical Education; a pamphlet from the Ling Physical Education Association on 'The Scope of the Work of the Teacher in Physical Education in a Girls' Secondary School'; and photographs of physical training classes and netball.
The content and dating of the scrapbook suggests that it was started by Althea Roberts when she was a student at Bedford Physical Training College but was continually added to during her service with the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). In particular, the photographs depict members of the ATS and not Bedford students.
