Set XX (1921-1924)

Scope and Content

Black/brown oilcloth album with 'BPTC' crest embossed on front cover containing 140 photographs of students and staff of Bedford Physical Training College for the years 1921-1924. It is probable that the album was created by members of Set XX and presented to the College. All of the images have captions describing scenes, activities and naming individuals.
Scenes from College life include the following: students diving at Commercial Road Baths and Newnham Baths, gymnastic and dancing demonstrations performed for Demonstration Day 1924; cricket, hockey, lacrosse, netball and tennis teams and scenes from matches; Set XX; interior of gymnasium and big lecture room, exterior of gymnasium, medical room, Nos. 3, 17 and 37 Lansdowne Road; scenes from Past v. Present (March 1922) and A Heart Attack in Three Palpitations (1924) accompanied by a list of the cast and scenes for both entertainments; excursions to Margaret Stansfeld's cottage at Pavenham, Bedfordshire, Empire Day (1923); scenes from a Folk Dance competition held at Lilford Hall, Northamptonshire at which the College competed on 14 June 1924; views from St Thomas' Hospital, London (Easter 1924), the founder and Principal, Margaret Stansfeld, being presented with the gift of a car from staff and former students on 4 August 1924 to mark the College's 21st anniversary.
Several students from Set XX are identified together with several staff including tutors: Aileen Carr, Freda Colwill, Constance Hedley (née Mason), Ida Hadley, Helen McMinn, Molly Petit, Cicely Read, Elizabeth Roberts, Helen Rowlatt and Margaret Stansfeld.
Inserted into the album is a printed programme for the Students' Demonstration held on 19 July 1924. Several of the dances listed in the programme are shown in the album.
