Administrative / Biographical History

Neath Constitutional Club was established on 1 January 1884 in Bank Chambers, New Street Square, Neath. The Club was formed to serve as a meeting place for Conservatives of Neath and neighbouring areas. The name Constitutional was used because its founders were supporters of the Constitutionalists within the Party, a section formed in 1846 as a consequence of the repeal of the Corn Laws. The building on Orchard Street was opened on August 19, 1886, by Stafford Henry Northcote, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh on land donated by Howel Gwyn.
