Attila

Scope and Content

This series contains drafts scripts for the proposed series.

Administrative / Biographical History

In c.1983 Burgess began work on a proposed television mini-series about the life of Attila the Hun, entitled Attila. Although the mini-series was not made, Burgess used the scripts which he had produced as the basis for the novella, Hun, published in The Devil's Mode (a collection of short stories by Burgess) in 1989.

Burgess imagines Attila as a reworking of Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine: Attila declares that he has become "the scourge of God", echoing Marlowe's "For Tamburlaine, the scourge of God, must die".
