Administrative / Biographical History

In 1958 Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Leicester. During the visit the Queen opened a new building for Leicester University, the Percy Gee Building. The Royal party made a visit to Victoria Park, De Montfort Hall and to N.Corah (St. Margaret) Limited. N.Corah was a hosiery factory which had supplied for the war effort. A silver rose bowl was presented to the Queen.

Both the Bowl and the brochure were designed by lecturers at Leicester College of Art (a predecessor of De Montfort University). The silver bowl was designed and made by A.W. Hodge and N.R.G Poynton, both key figures at School of Industrial Design. A.W Hodge was the Head of School and N.R.G Poynton was a senior lecturer in the same department. The programme for the event was designed by Tom Westley, who was a lecturer in Typographic design at the College of Art .
