Adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel, Wives and Daughters : An Everyday Story, first published as a serial between August 1864 and January 1866. The four-part television adaptation was produced jointly by the BBC and WGBH Boston and first broadcast 28-Nov-99. It marked the reunion of Davies with Sue Birtwistle, with whom he had collaborated on Pride and Prejudice . The programme featured Michael Gambon, Penelope Winton, Bill Patterson and Rosamund Pike, earning four BAFTA awrds, including Best Actor (Television) for Gambon.
