Penguin Collection: Small Caches

Scope and Content

The David Hedges Collection contains a number of documents on the promotion, sale, and representation of Penguin Books, Ltd., as well as print copies of several volumes on the history of the company and articles collected from periodicals. Publicity material covers 1945-1988, with the broadest range of material falling between the 1960s and 1970s. The Steve Hare Papers (DM 1614) contain a number of documents on the history of Penguin. There are also documents on publishers and publishing in the Twentieth Century, and biographical materials used as research for "Penguin Portrait: Allen Lane and the Penguin Editors, 1935-1970" (Penguin, 1995), edited by Steve Hare. These files also contain information on the Penguin Collector's Society. The Steve Hare Papers (DM 1614) contain a number of documents on the history of Penguin. There are also documents on publishers and publishing in the Twentieth Century, and biographical materials used as research for "Penguin Portrait: Allen Lane and the Penguin Editors, 1935-1970" (Penguin, 1995), edited by Steve Hare. These files also contain information on the Penguin Collector's Society. DM 1647 contains material assembled by Steve Hare on the 60th Anniversary of Penguin in 1995. This includes a complete set of the Penguin 60s books - pocket excerpts and short stories sold at 60 pence each by Penguin on their 60th anniversary.
