William Paty and Henry Wood

Scope and Content

Collection of 138 drawings of funerary monuments, buildings, and fireplaces. Original pen and ink/watercolour sketches have been mounted on modern paper, with pencil annotations attributing designers. The drawings consist of 124 drawings of funerary monuments, and 14 drawings of houses, plans, and fireplaces.

Administrative / Biographical History

The drawings have the appearance of being the copybook of the firm of William Paty and Son, which clients would browse through to select designs. The chief people connected with this work are probably William Paty and Henry Wood.

The material described here is housed in the Arts and Social Sciences Library. The Special Collections department in the Arts and Social Sciences Library is open from 9.15 am to 6.45 pm from Monday to Thursday, and 9.15 am to 4.45 pm on Friday (unless otherwise indicated). Note

Bound volume, used at both ends, with notes by Gordon Priest on its use: 'Bristol Society of Architects: books borrowed from the Library'. Inside the cover a regulation dated Nov. 1864 notes that 'No book to be taken from the Library without the name being first inserted in this Book with the Borrower and the date of borrowing'. Covers the period 1864-66. 'Catalogue of books belonging to the Bristol Society of Architects'. Alphabetical listing, with location of books. [no date but probably mid nineteenth century] There are also several pencil sketches of people, dating from the 1930s.

Custodial History

These drawings were the property of the Royal West of England Academy School of Architecture and are listed in Gordon Priest's Library Catalogue of 1963. They were returned to the University of Bristol Library Special Collections in April 2000.
