Administrative / Biographical History
John Gordon (d 1851?), entered the army in 1839, joining the 91st Regt of Foot which was then commanded by General Gabriel Gordon, possibly a relative. He was appointed Quartermaster in 1841, later Adjutant, and promoted to the rank of lieutenant at the end of 1849. According to the 1852 edition of Hart's Army List, he was killed in action.

The document was found among EUL Miscellaneous Papers series when the collections were being reorganised in 2000. It probably formed part of an autograph collection before coming to the Library.
