John Bolton (d 1862?) entered the army as an ensign on 5 November 1813, joining the 75th Regt of Foot. According to editions of Hart's Army List he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1819, to Captain in 1835, to Major in 1846 and Lt-Col on 28 November 1854. He is reported dead, retired on half-pay, in the 1863 edition.

Custodial History
The document was found among EUL Miscellaneous Papers series when the collections were being reorganised in 2000. Due to the signatures (Victoria and Newcastle) it probably formed part of an autograph collection before coming to the Library.
