Administrative / Biographical History

Nene College was renamed University College Northampton following the Dearing Report. Minutes of the Governing Council meeting held on 23 March 1999 note that "on 3 February 1999, Her Majesty's Privy Council gave consent for the former Nene College to take up the legal title of University College Northampton. The Clerk would submit proposals for appropriate amendments to the University College's Instruments and Articles of Government in due course".

At that time, the Senate replaced the Academic Board, the Governing Council replaced the Board of Governors, and the Director became the Rector. A new structure of Senate sub-committees came into effect in January 2003, these being the Planning and Resources Committee, the Academic Policy and Management Committee, the Research Committee, and the Academic Quality and Standards Committee.

The title University College Northampton is often shortened to UCN.

In 2003, the College applied for research degree awarding powers and the title of University. This application was successful and in 2005 the University of Northampton was formed.
