Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Dundee University Students' Union was formed in November 1886 with the intention of providing students with an opportunity for social activities. There were to be fortnightly literary and scientific meetings, debates, and more informal activities. The Union was initially housed in temporary accommodation and was hampered by a lack of suitable accommodation for many years until it took over Ellenbank, a house fronting Perth Road.
The student body was also represented by the Students' Representative Council, which had the right to petition Senate and Court on matters affecting students and was the body which looked after the students' interests. With the establishment of the University of Dundee in 1967 the student body regrouped itself and a single Students' Association was created in 1969 from the old Students' Union and Students' Representative Council. The new body combined the social and representative functions of the others.
In 1973 Dundee University Students' Association acquired a Permanent Secretary and in 1974 moved into a new building complete with swimming pool, largely financed by the proceeds of a University appeal conducted in St Andrews prior to the creation of Dundee University. The 1970s saw increased student participation in the government of the University and the Association has continued to expand its role and the facilities it offers.
