Scope and Content

Sketches for important commissions, ranging from designs for Queen Mary's Boudoir at Buckingham Palace and the Duchesse Angouleme's room at the Tuileries Palace in Paris, to a small sketch by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and some Paisley pattern designs that can perhaps be attributed to Silver Studio. Also includes Japanese 'Komon' stencils and patterns which were perhaps used as design resources by designers. The majority of sketches are from around the turn of the century. Designs sometimes carry a number written in red ink - these numbers have been taken to be the Design Number and have been catalogued as the Design Title. These numbers can be cross referenced with STOD/201/1/8/1 'Templeton Register of Designs Brought - Sketches 1897-1915 (1925)'. Some of the designs feature letters and numbers in the form 'SK/F 234', or similar, accompanied by a coloured sticky dot, which perhaps refers to a more recently added indexing system.
