The study of medicine is thought to have officially begun at the University of Glasgow in 1637, when Robert Mayne MA was appointed Professor of Medicine to give public lectures in medicine once or twice every week. He held this post until 1646 and after a lapse due to lack of funds, the John Johnstoun MD was appointed Professor of Medicine in 1714, followed by William Cullen in 1751. The distinct Faculty of Medicine itself was formed in 1856 and originally included teaching in Medicine, Botany and Anatomy with many more subjects over the centuries since. Two independent medical colleges, St Mungo's College and Anderson's College of Medicine, and the Glasgow Dental Hospital and School merged with the University in the twentieth century. Nursing has been taught since 1978. Veterinary Medicine was part of the Faculty of Medicine from 1949 until 1966 when a separate Veterinary Medicine Faculty was established. September 2002 witnessed the opening of the new Wolfson Medical School Building on University Avenue.
