Correspondence of Professor George Stuart (d. 1793)

Scope and Content

The correspondence consists of: letters between Mr. Little of Liberton and Orchardhead and Dr. G. Stuart. with some remarks on James Graham, 'the Quack doctor', 1778; letters to David Steuart Erskine, 11th Earl of Buchan, 1782-1786; and, a copy of an account of the election of Stuart to the Chair of Humanity, 1742.

Administrative / Biographical History

George Stuart was born circa 1715, He held the Chair of Humanity at Edinburgh University between 1741 and 1775. Between 1747 and 1763 he also held the office of Librarian but he was said 'to have been inefficient in his management of the Library'. Stuart was the father of Dr. Gilbert Stuart (1742-1786), the historian and reviewer. Professor George Stuart died at Fisherrow, Musselburgh on 18 June 1793.
