Administrative / Biographical History

George Bruce and Co. was established in 1818 by George Bruce, previously general merchant at Keig, Whitehouse, Alford, Aberdeenshire. His first premises were in Market Street, Alford, though the business was subsequently moved to Aberdeen, where it operated from Back Hilton Road, and later, 12 Regent Quay. It served an area extending from Carlisle to Orkney. In 1973 the business was taken over by Hamlyns, then situated at 70 Regent Quay, Aberdeen.
