Henry Fife Morland Simpson was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1859 and educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He taught and married in Germany, then returned to Britain to take up a post at Marlborough College. He later taught at Fettes College, Edinburgh, before being appointed Rector of Aberdeen Grammar School in 1893. He published widely, including work on prehistory, Montrose, Aberdeen Grammar School, local history, folk music and Runes. He died in 1920. His son, William Douglas Simpson (1896 - 1968), became librarian at Aberdeen University.
