R. S. Williams of Bangor Papers

Scope and Content

A short account by R. S. Williams of a voyage from Melbourne to Southampton, April 1892 - June 1892, along with details of later events, up until September 1894, such as a journey to New York. Enclosed are a few letters,1886-1887.

Also, an index to the journal Y Genhinen, dating from 1883 - 1928 - a work for which R. S. Williams won £20 at the National Eisteddfod in Fishguard in 1936.

Administrative / Biographical History

R. S. Williams was a native of Llanrug, Caernarfonshire. He was zealous church goer and a stout Conservative. In 1886 he emigrated to Australia and returned in 1892 before setting off to New York. He soon returned to Britain and worked in Liverpool as a tram driver before being employed by the London and North Western Railway. He married three times, and died in 1937.
