Richard Jones of Caernarfon Papers

Scope and Content

Essays on various subjects which were entered for different Eisteddfod competitions. Some contain manuscript amendments or notes made by adjudicators. The topics included are Ieuan Brydydd Hir; John Jones, Glan Gors; Thomas Roberts, Llwynrhudol; Eifionydd poets; Pedr Fardd; the hymn writers of the 17th century; pioneers of the Baptists; Nefydd; Daniel Owen; Cantre'r Gwaelod; the diary of John Kelsall; the sermons preached by Rev. O. Davies in 1882. There are also transcripts of the letters of Ieuan Brydydd Hir copied from Panton Ms 74, 1776-1778, and the work on John Kelsall consists of quotations from his diary, 1723-1734.

Administrative / Biographical History

Richard Jones of Isallt, Caernarfon worked as a postmaster in Porthmadog, Machynlleth, Ormskirk and Aberystwyth. He died in 1935 at the age of 76.He was well known as a writer, a reciter and a recognised adjudicator. As well as being a faithful follower of the National Eisteddfod, he was also a regular competitor.
