Lady Gladstone Papers

Material consists of personal items collected by Lady Gladstone. It includes two autograph albums (one given to Lady Gladstone by her mother Lady Rendel). Amongst the signatories are members of prominent families and clergy, contemporary statesmen such as William E. Gladstone, David Lloyd George, artists and European royalty. One album also contains a drawing of William Gladstone by W.L. Wyllie.

The collection also consists of musical material including a series of tunes and melodies with some traditional music from Wales, Ireland and Hungary, printed and in manuscript form by various artists; airs and pastorals arranged by Mary Carmichael; songs dedicated to Lady Gladstone by Mary Carmichael; others composed and dedicated to "my Aunt Maud" by Harry Stewart Goodhart-Rendel.

Maud E. Gladstone, Lady Gladstone of Hawarden, was the second daughter of the first and last baron Rendel (died 1913). In 1890 she married Henry Neville Gladstone (1852-1935) the third son of Liberal Party leader and Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) and his wife Catharine. Lady Gladstone was a great music lover and had many friends and acquaintances who were musicians including Mary Carmicheal (died 1935) and her sister Rose's son Harry Stewart Goodhart-Rendel who composed music and was Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University from 1933-1936. Lady Gladstone died in 1941.

Material is arranged according to record type and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts .
